The film begins with Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Joshi) receiving a call from their college friend Chatur Ramalingam (Vaidya), who claims to have found their long-lost friend Ranchoddas Chanchad (Khan), also known as Rancho. They travel to Ladakh, where Chatur intends to humiliate Rancho for his prank ten years ago. On the way, they recall their college days and the events that shaped their lives.

In flashback, it is shown that Rancho was a brilliant and unconventional student who joined the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in Delhi. He befriended Farhan and Raju, who were struggling with their academics and personal problems. Rancho inspired them to pursue their true interests and question the orthodox methods of teaching. He also fell in love with Pia (Kapoor), the daughter of the strict college director Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Irani), also known as Virus. Rancho often clashed with Virus and Chatur, who was a model student and a conformist. Rancho also helped Pia’s sister Mona (Singh) deliver a baby with the help of a vacuum cleaner, a feat that earned him the respect of Pia and her family.

On the graduation day, Rancho disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only his name on the college wall. Farhan and Raju were unable to contact him, as he had given them a fake address and phone number. Chatur, however, claimed to have found Rancho’s real identity and address, and challenged him to a bet. He said that he would prove that he was more successful than Rancho, who had become a scientist and a patent holder.

In the present, Farhan and Raju are shocked to learn that the person they thought was Rancho was actually an orphaned servant boy who had been adopted by the real Ranchoddas Chanchad, a wealthy businessman. The real Ranchoddas had allowed the servant boy to study in his place, as he himself was not interested in engineering. The servant boy had taken the name of Rancho and used his intelligence and creativity to excel in the college. He had also kept in touch with the real Ranchoddas, who had funded his research and inventions.

Farhan and Raju then find out that Rancho is actually Phunsukh Wangdu, a renowned scientist and innovator, who lives in a remote village in Ladakh. They reunite with him and also bring along Pia, who had broken up with her fiance Suhas (Lafont), a materialistic and arrogant engineer. Chatur, who had become a wealthy and successful businessman, also arrives at the village, hoping to sign a deal with Wangdu. He is stunned to see that Wangdu is none other than Rancho, and loses the bet. Rancho and Pia confess their love for each other and get married. Farhan and Raju also achieve their dreams of becoming a wildlife photographer and a corporate executive, respectively. The film ends with the four friends posing for a photograph with the tagline “All is well”.

More importantly, they have the same social conscience that underlines the humour and humanism in his cinema. 3 Idiots is a sparkling example of such cinema.”
